RATNAGIRI: A grassroots movement led by Mr. Patloba Patil is set to transform the local economy of Ratnagiri District by focusing on the often-neglected yet highly potential ‘Managa’ or ‘Borbet’ bamboo. Patil’s vision is to secure a respectable position for this bamboo variety in the global market by uniting farmers and championing a crucial ‘Value Addition’ movement.
💰 Towards Entrepreneurship: Turning Raw Material into Gold!
Traditionally, many farmers in Ratnagiri cultivate Managa bamboo, but a lack of a cohesive marketing system and proper organization has prevented them from receiving fair remuneration for their hard work. Recognizing this critical need, Mr. Patil initiated workshops in various locations, including Saundal, Kolvan, Khadi, Talawade, and Pachal, to guide and organize the farmers.

Mr. Patil’s Take: “Managa bamboo is a boon to the Konkan region. But instead of just selling the raw cane, processing it into diverse products can multiply farmers’ income several times over. Our focus is squarely on this ‘Value Addition’.”

The core of this movement is the transformation of raw bamboo into finished products. The plan includes setting up Processing Units and Small Scale Industries to evolve farmers from mere producers into entrepreneurs.
🎍 The Value Addition Formula: Bamboo-Based Products and Opportunities
The movement emphasizes the following key areas for value addition:

  • Bamboo Handicrafts: Creating attractive furniture, decorative items, and household goods.
  • Construction Material: Developing durable and eco-friendly Bamboo Based Construction Material.
  • Charcoal and Energy: Utilizing bamboo for the production of Bio-char and Bio-energy.
  • Training: Providing training in bamboo processing and marketing to foster entrepreneurship among farmers.
🧑‍🌾 Organization and Upcoming Initiatives: A New Hope for Job Creation
Mr. Patil’s efforts are expected to create significant new Employment Opportunities in rural areas. Prioritizing local women and youth in the processing industries is anticipated to help curb the Migration issue in Konkan.
A well-received fair, organized jointly by the Rajapur Taluka Bamboo Farmers Group and the Maharashtra Bamboo Promotion Foundation, Mumbai, marked a significant step. Notable contributions came from Suhas More, Pratik Lad, Nagesh Bane (Kolvankhadi), Vasudev Ghag (Saundal), Abdulgani Lanjekar (Ozar), Atul Pawar (Kelwali), Pralhad Narkar (Adavali), along with Dilip Jadhav and Kunjan Salvi of the Pitambari Group.
  • Regular Activities: The organization plans to conduct various activities on the 18th of every month. Recently, on October 18th, a visit was made to the bamboo farm and industry of the Pitambari Group.
  • Ambitious Future Plan: The next crucial step in this scheme involves establishing bamboo depots at various locations for sale on November 18, 2025.
To strengthen this movement, Mr. Patil and his organization have appealed to the State and Central Governments for financial assistance, technical guidance, and market access under the ‘Bamboo Policy’. This initiative by Patloba Patil promises to usher in a new dawn for Managa bamboo farmers in Ratnagiri.
